Description

Now, there are three reasons I drew this:

-I'd been reading Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and a lot of the beasts didn't seem that fantastic. I mean, the Knarl is just a grumpier hedgehog. So, I started thinking about what sort of magical abilities a animal could have.
-I'd been thinking about what sorts of monsters might live around Ottawa, much like I did with the Arrowhead Gryphon. I still can't think of something to do with all the deer we have around the place, but another bird and small mammal eater works.
-I've got a bad case of artist block and I've got to draw something; it might as well be an owl that vomits up undead minions.

Necyos Owl
Necyos Owls are large owls, with a wingspan up to 120 cm, found throughout North America. They are easily identifiable by their dark plumage, while males also have white-tipped feathers for attracting the females. Though they have a wide diet, Necyos Owls prefer to feed on small mammals and birds, though they will sometimes take on prey up to the size of a goose.

Necyos Owls tend to eat prey whole and, like most owls, will regurgitate "owl pellets" with indigestible matter like hair and bones. Unlike other owls, these bones will then reanimate and form undead skeletal creatures to serve the Necyros Owl. These minions will clean the nest, attack intruders and sometimes even hunt for the owl, bringing back dead animals for it. Magic compensates for any lost bones, but as the minions age they become more and more ethereal and eventually disintegrate. Before mating, the males will find a nest and gorge themselves on small animals, creating a swarm to protect the mother and offspring. Young develop the ability to create minions around the time they fledge, rarely swallowing animals whole before then and only creating easily destroyed creations when they do.

Oddly enough, when Necyos Owls are killed and eaten, their bones reanimate and follow the killer. Some believe this is just the result of their magic rebounding and that these predators would be able to control the owl skeleton if they had the ability. Others believe this is a defence mechanism, as most animals are unnerved by an undead owl following them and are unlikely to do it again.

Fantastic! Will you be doing more beasts and animals like this? :)
